Fast Advice in Fast Times from a Fast Guy

Alan Webber has had a fascinating career – community organizer, political consultant, editor at Harvard Business Review, founder of Fast Company magazine and, now, social entrepreneur.

Since he sold Fast Company, Webber is often tapped for advice on how to navigate the rapidly changing economic landscape. That's the context for his new book, “Rules of Thumb,” a guide making sense out of these confusing, challenging, and compelling times. The book hit the shelves April 21, and as a friend of RapidChange, Alan has offered up an excerpt so you can get a sense of his brand of wisdom.

"The time has come to re-think, re-imagine, and re-calibrate what is possible, what is desirable, what is sustainable. It’s time to re-write the rules," Webber writes.

There are 52 rules, one for each week of the year. And they aren’t all his – he taps into a wide range of the world’s leading thinkers and highest achievers. The rules come from real-life lessons learned and recorded on three-by-five cards, a trick borrowed from one of the many mentors whose teachings Webber captures and catalogues in this book.
